Nitrous oxide is commonly used in dental procedures, but it is gaining popularity at medical centers as an effective pain blocker for women giving birth. Unlike epidurals, which can compromise short-term muscle movement for many patients, nitrous oxide allows the patient to retain full mobility. Although it is known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide doesn’t usually make women laugh uncontrollably during labor.
